In Tro-tros and Potholes, Laura Enridge bunks with prostitutes, hitches rides with motorcycle cops, and sleeps on rooftops. It's a reading adventure, with the internet playing a key role. At what other time in history could a solo explorer stay in almost instant touch with people around the world? During four months of traveling in Ghana, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso and Togo, Laura Enridge thrilled friends and family back home with her vivid stories, often written in “stinky internet cafés with sticky keyboards.” Here, her unedited emails are mingled with more detailed memoirs to form a wonderful collection of human stories, written straight from the heart.
A keen observer, Enridge takes an interest in almost everyone she meets. Her colourful glimpses into daily life in West African cities and villages are captured on every page of this delightful book.

Now that's a travel adventure for the ages! Laura Enridge has written a delightful memoir of her solo travels through several countries in West Africa. This was a very bold undertaking for even well-seasoned travelers, let alone an unaccompanied single woman in her thirties! Her experiences were, shall we say, very down to earth...literally. As in dirt. Mud. Pounding rain. Sweltering heat. Creepy-crawlies. Very questionable food. Rickety transportation manufactured shortly after the wheel was invented. Yet through it all, her strength of character and delightful sense of humor carry the day.
What she discovered, for the most part, is a wonderfully simple-living citizenry that is quite content and uncomplaining and indeed charming in its colorful customs and lore. On the flip side, she can see the frustration involved in trying to introduce progress of any kind into a system that is root-bound by respect for the village elders, who of course are not inclined toward change of any kind.
This was not an easy trip by any stretch of the imagination. Grueling is more like it. And it takes an extraordinary individual to pluck out measurable reward from the daily misery of simply getting from point A to point B, or getting fed, or getting clean. Extraordinary as in the fearless Laura Enridge. If I didn't know better, I'd peg her for a good ole corn-fed, kick-ass Texas gal...so I hereby declare her an honorary one!
Everyone who loves adventure should read Laura's book; there's nothing better than a true-life one, especially one written by this special lady with such a remarkable and unbiased "joie de vivre". A truly vivid and strikingly detailed memoir, with wonderful photos as well!

Trotros and Potholes West Africa Solo eBook Laura Enridge Reviews
A friend gave me this book because I love travel, adventures, and reading about other cultures. It met all my loves; it was like living vicariously through an author that dared adventures I would never brave. I laughed out loud and couldn't put it down. I lent it to my boss who had lived in Africa. She returned it 3 days later complaining of lack of sleep & exclaimed "The book took me right back! I could smell it!! Good and bad!" I thought that was the best compliment.
I loved this book! It was like being there. The writer provides insights that make you feel like you met the people she met, ate the food she ate and was on the bumpy road together. She is clever, always getting the most out of each "adventure" and brings great humor to sticky situations. I flew through the book, barely able to put it down. In some ways it makes me want to pick up and travel to the places she writes about ... in other ways it's as if I have already been. I highly recommend this book for any adventure travelers.
This travelogue is really two books in one. The structure alternates between the author's emails to friends and family and more reflective polished pieces written after the fact. The book offers a clear sense of the people and places she encountered on her solo adventures. The voice contained within the writing is compelling, honest, and full of humor. Like all good travel writing, the pages go beyond mere recollections and paint a picture of the greater forces that shape a country's people.
Fun filled light reading dealing with the banal challenges of life in West Africa. Enjoyed it thoroughly!
I'm heading to W. Africa for my first visit, and this book is just what I was looking for to give me an idea of what travel is like. It is an entertaining, well written story that's really more of a blog pieced together, which also allows following the author's development and growth over the course of the adventure. Highly recommended.
I can truly say I am in awe of the bravery and openness of author Laura Enridge. The thought of backpacking alone through Africa scares me to death, yet she writes about her travels in a way that not only brought it alive, it made me wish in certain moments I'd been with her. Tro-tros is quite a tale, well worth the read. It left me wanting more and wondering if this accomplished traveler will write a sequel? Love, love love her writing, her sense of humor AND the photos at the end - don't miss this story!
What a delightful book! The author writes with warmth, exasperation, and delight about her travels in West Africa.
She shares her experience as a series of email she sent to family and friends at home during her four month solo trip. Alternating chapters supplement the emails, providing more depth and insight about the people, places, and cultures of the region.
Her stories were often humorous, sometimes sad, but always thought-provoking.
My only complaint is that I wanted more!
